Aeration & Thatching

Aeration is the naturally pross of air exchange between the soil and its surrounding atmoshere. Aerating lawns is one of the most important and neglected services available for your lawn. Core aeration is a secret weapon in making your lawn healthy. This is a process of mechanically removing small plugs of thatch from the lawn to improve aeration.

Benefits of core aeration

Oxygen gets to the roots and the soil

Fertilizers and natural nutrients get access to the root system

    Enhance water uptake in soil

    Reduce water runoff

    Helps break up thatch

Enhances heat and drought stress tolerance

Produces stronger roots and soil structure

    Greener

    Easier to maintain

Suffer from fewer disease and pest problems

Penetration depends on soil type and soil moisture. Most aeration tines penetrate between 1.5 -2.5 inches and are spaced 6 in apart. Annual aeration is beneficial for lawns in the Northern Virginia area. Spring and autumn are both ideal time to aerate.

Immediately after aeration your lawn will be dotted with small plugs. These plugs willl break down naturally. About 7 to 10 days after aeration the holes will begin to fill with roots responding to the additional oxygen and moisture.

Lawns with compacted or poor soils may take more than one aeration. Lawns will benefit from soil amendments

Thatch is the dead and decaying plant tissue located between the soil and the green vegetation. It is beneficial to have a thin layer to reduce soil compaction and increases wear tolerance. A thatch layer of more than 1/2 inch prevents air, light and water from reaching the lawns roots. Excess thatch also make an excellent breeding ground for harmful insects and disease organisms. Dethatching is the process of removing the thatch from the lawn. The power dethatcher mechanically removes the thatch and lifts the debris to the surface allowing for clean up.

Benefits of dethatching

Allows light to reach the entire plant

Fertilizers and natural nutrients get access to the root system

Enhance water uptake in soil

Reduce water runoff

Enhances heat and drought stress tolerance

Produces stronger roots and soil structure

Greener

Easier to maintain

Helps control disease and pest problems
